Dear Reader:

Thank you for choosing to learn more about the Sheffield-Sheffield Lake City School District and our state report card. Our school district serves between 1850 and 1900 students annually. We are members of the Patriot Athletic Conference for athletics. We are located in the heart of Lorain County approximately 25 minutes west of Cleveland, on the shores of Lake Erie. Our district is progressive in that we offer 17 college credit plus courses in which students may earn up to 2 associates degrees without ever leaving our campus. This is free to our students and our current staff is qualified to teach these courses for college and high school credit in cooperation with Lorain Community College. In addition to our college credit plus courses, our district offers a diverse arena of other courses and opportunities for students. A newly built high school and middle school are showcases for our community and our recently renovated stadium and track are something to be very proud of. Our average ACT score is above the state average and the majority of our students attend college or the military after graduation.

Our state report card for 2016-2017 shows improvements in passing indicators from the previous year and we are very happy with that growth. We are not near the success we showed on the OAA exams back in 2015. (The tests that the state previously required our students to take.) After seeing the test for the first time, we knew curriculum alignment was necessary and we spent a great portion of last year aligning our content to what the test makers thought should be tested. We continue this process this year as well.

Also, this year, we are working to improve our intervention and small group instruction. I’m proud to say that this year we began to offer all-day kindergarten to our students and we are confident that this will not only raise our report card scores, but most importantly it will help our students be better readers throughout their lifetime. Regardless of the state testing success, research shows that early literacy is a student’s gateway to success and for that reason we are excited to be able to offer all day kindergarten for the 2017 school year and beyond.

While we realize the importance of state testing, we also realize that state testing is not the full measure of our district’s success or it’s students. Our students have qualified for the 2017 world championship for Robotics. We have earned superior ratings at OMEA for Band. We are able to offer technology to our students fully integrated into our classrooms including chrome books, interactive projectors and also “Clever Touch” displays. We have developed collaborative work spaces with innovative seating and areas for 3D printing and computer demonstrations. We have students that have finished in first place at Young Authors conferences and we are confident that we prepare students not only to graduate from our district with the multiple options to pursue their dreams and be successful but also to enjoy their education from start to finish. We are proud to be Cardinals from Sheffield-Sheffield Lake City Schools.

Thank you again for visiting our site!

Sincerely,

Michael F. Cook
